Solutions for an autonomous power supply
Phocos AG is among the world's leading manufacturers of solar-powered charge controllers and components for autonomous power supply. Energy-saving appliances such as lamps, refrigeration/freezing appliances and TV monitors supplement the product spectrum. The products developed and produced by Phocos enable the eco-friendly and efficient use of solar energy.
The core: mains-independent photovoltaic installations
In principle, a PV system consists of four parts: the solar modules, the solar-powered charge controller, the battery and the electrical loads. Phocos solar-powered charge controllers comprise the core of such systems. Their function is to safeguard the battery against overcharging and against discharge in excess of a given limit value. In addition, Phocos charge controllers increase the efficiency of the system as a whole.
Origin in researchThe origin of Phocos lies in research: in the mid-1980s, engineers
at Ulm University of Applied Sciences developed new technologies for
charge controllers. Toward the end of the year 2000, some of these
researchers founded the company Phocos AG. To this day, Phocos maintains
a close co-operation with Ulm University of Applied Sciences in the
field of autonomous power supply.
The founders of Phocos AG set their sights particularly on "off-grid" applications: solar-power-based isolated applications with no connection to the central power mains. Especially in the rural regions of developing and emerging economies, the demand for such autonomous systems remains high. Yet the demand for mains-independent solar-power system is also continuously on the rise in the world's industrialized nations. The reasons behind this trend lie in lower installation and operation costs, as well as in mobile application options. This means that Phocos solar-powered charge controllers are used, for instance, in street lights or mobile homes and boats to provide an energy supply. Other areas of application in ever-higher demand include telecommunications and heavy-industry operations.
On-site productionPhocos contributes to making eco-friendly energy available – even in the most remote regions of the world. To enable the supply of the necessary technology at market-driven prices, Phocos manufactures its products in the vicinity of the major business markets within China, India and Bolivia. The corporate headquarters and the engineering division are both based in Ulm, Germany. Via its 12 holding companies and service offices, Phocos enjoys a worldwide presence.
| Technology Phocos is strongly committed to developing and producing products that meet the strictest specifications in terms of quality, Innovation Phocos highly skilled R& D team work in close collaboration with the University of Applied Science of Ulm and other distinguished institutes in Germany to produce components which greatly enhance the life-span of the battery and improve the efficiency of the solar power system. Reliability Key issues in the off-grid rural electrification market are reliability and cost. The rugged and advanced technology used in Phocos charge controllers and associated products ensure greater reliability thus improving the overall efficiency of the system and lowers the costs of energy storage. Off-grid Applications Phocos offer a cutting edge range of components for off-grid power supply systems including a comprehensive range of solar charge controllers, system management units, DC fluorescent lamps and refrigerators, micro-hydro turbines and fuel-cell hybrid systems. Phocos products are versatile and suitable for a wide range of applications such as industrial power supplies, telecommunications, traffic control, lighting and for leisure purposes such as boating and sailing. Flexibility The ability of Phocos to respond a customer’s specific needs enables them to offer highly sophisticated and customised solutions for use in larger industrial systems or in low cost stand-alone systems for large rural electrification projects. Worldwide Network Phocos products are supported worldwide by a team of highly experienced engineers providing you with the necessary technical back-up and support. |
